Philippe Boemans was one of the very first Belgian composers to have endeavoured to break free from the dogmatism of serial music to return to a certain "musicality" and rediscover the immediacy of contact with listeners; thus, he never writes against an instrument but for it, and always with keen sense of the instrumental colour, of the sensuousness of the timbre and an extreme liberty which never fails to delight in surprising listeners with a multitude of "trompe-l'oreille" illusions. Typical of Boesman's devotion to the polyphonic tradition and the musical forms that it has bequeathed to us, the collected works on this CD are at the same time extremely close in timeand movement, two of them reviving the great tradition of the concerto - in which the soloist, his virtuosity and his relationship with the orchestra are at the centre of the performance - (Violin Concerto - command performance of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège, 1979 - and the Piano Concerto (1978), the other returning to the tradition of variation and an imitation - transformation approach (Conversions - 1980).
